DICTIONARY DEFINITION - dictionary.com
Originality is fundamentally the work created by one person without being copied from works of others, in essence
originality is the work of an artist that is new, the term 'originality' is also referred to as a compliment to artists and creative's.
The notion of originally itself however is a different matter, how can you justify if your works are original;
"Original, painting the mountain as you see it
Creative, painting the mountain as it can be seen
Visionary, you are painted by the mountain"
If however two people are painting the same mountain at the same time, and both had the same idea, it is most likely an impossibility to tell which is the true original idea; "The concept of originality is culturally con
tingent"
The notion of originality is an idea "not thought up by someone else before hand" and that this notion is not that of a single person as two or more people can have the same thought at the same time and each will present different outcomes, when an idea becomes unoriginal is when this work has been copied or recreated, it is essential that we understand that just because we have an idea does not make it original, and by researching that idea or theory will help understand if your idea is truly original, and if not then will able you to take further inspiration to better the outcome.
By taking two iconic images and looking at how they we re-contextualised into today's culture, we can see that the notion of originality is pushed to the side to make a statement of obvious homage to its predecessor.
